A Chaotic New Home

A Household Already in Motion
A rough landing
Tatum Gray wakes to his cat Freckle looming over him and tumbles out of bed before recognizing the threat as domestic rather than professional. The encounter establishes the disorder of his new life in Dale City: he misses Los Angeles, has not settled into his apartment, and is already negotiating with a pet that seems to resent him.
Marvin appears at the door
The knock reveals that Tatum’s eighty-seven-year-old grandfather, Marvin, has been found wandering at night. Marvin turns the apparent emergency into a joke about avoiding young men who might rob him while he buys drugs for an elderly acquaintance. The humor does not erase Tatum’s concern: Marvin is grieving, adjusting poorly, and making risky choices.
Care as an obligation
Tatum is about to leave for Chicago and asks Marvin to look after Freckle. He also mentions Timothy, a fish he has apparently acquired through his new connection with Christine Mancuso. The small request to feed the fish makes Tatum’s household duties feel both absurd and real: even a temporary work assignment now requires him to arrange care for people and animals at home.
The Cat and the Fish

A Domestic Arrangement Unravels
Instructions ignored
While away on the Chicago case, Tatum receives a run of messages from Marvin about Freckle. The cat has vomited, and Marvin admits he fed it the wrong food before discovering the correct cupboard. Each message suggests that Tatum’s hurried handover has left two stubborn creatures to improvise a household routine together.
Timothy’s uncertain place
Marvin is not even sure there is a fish, and Tatum has to remind him that Timothy needs an aquarium and food. The fish becomes an emblem of how casually Tatum has taken on responsibilities: he accepted the creature before making a reliable plan for its care, then left the problem to a man who may not remember it.
Comedy with a serious edge
The exchange is played for humor, but Tatum’s attention repeatedly returns to Marvin’s welfare. He checks whether his grandfather is taking prescribed pills and worries about the medication Marvin has substituted on advice from someone else. The household comedy therefore carries an underlying question: how can Tatum protect Marvin without turning care into another fight?
A Party at Home

Marvin Takes Over
Noise through the phone
Tatum calls home and can barely hear Marvin over loud music. His grandfather explains that he has invited friends and the neighbors, transforming Tatum’s apartment into a social gathering while Tatum is away. The exchange reverses their expected roles: Marvin is not waiting quietly for help but making his own plans, regardless of Tatum’s rules.
Freckle’s retaliation
The cat’s behavior has grown worse. Marvin reports that Freckle has soiled Tatum’s shoes, urinated on the bed, and shredded a blanket. Marvin has tried to remove him from the house and come away scratched, while Freckle remains in charge of the room by sheer aggression.
Tatum’s limited authority
Tatum tries to calm the situation and asks Marvin to call his doctor about his pills, but the conversation is interrupted by the party. He is left with no practical means to supervise either his grandfather or his cat from Chicago. The comedy exposes a genuine limit: affection makes Tatum responsible, but distance leaves him with little control.
Worry Beneath the Jokes

The Cost of Being Away
A warning from the doctor
Dr. Nassar calls Tatum to report that Marvin’s blood pressure is dangerously high and that he has stopped taking a prescribed medication. Marvin has instead tried pills supplied by an acquaintance. Tatum’s first reaction is fear, sharpened by the doctor’s warning that the situation could lead to a stroke or heart attack.
Tatum’s indirect persuasion
Marvin insists that he feels fine and dislikes the medication because it makes his throat itch. Tatum argues with him, then uses a more personal concern—possible erectile dysfunction—to make the risk feel immediate. The tactic is comic, but it reveals how closely Tatum attends to Marvin’s stubborn habits and how carefully he searches for a way to reach him.
An imperfect success
Marvin agrees to try the prescribed pill with tea and honey, though Tatum cannot be certain the promise will last. Their relationship is built from irritation, teasing, and practical intervention rather than formal declarations of care. The episode gives Tatum one small victory, but it does not resolve the wider uncertainty of looking after Marvin from afar.
Homecoming and Another Departure

Returning to the Household
Damage control
After returning from Chicago, Tatum finds his apartment in disarray and has to spend the night in his car. A cleaner later restores much of the home, though some damage remains, and Tatum discovers a beer bottle decorating Timothy’s aquarium. Freckle continues to resist affection, greeting Tatum’s attempt to pet him with claws.
A shared cup of tea
Marvin returns to ordinary conversation as if the house’s destruction were a minor inconvenience. He asks Tatum about Chicago and has read about the killings in the paper. Tatum can admit that the case went badly without having to explain every professional failure; Marvin listens, jokes, and offers tea.
The next obligation
Their conversation about a small town’s lasting judgments prompts Tatum to think about how people become trapped by public assumptions. He then considers leaving again to investigate the Maynard case. The household thread closes not with a settled home but with an ongoing bargain: Marvin and Freckle remain difficult, Timothy remains in the aquarium, and Tatum keeps returning to the responsibilities he cannot simply abandon.
